When You Absolutely Need A/C

When it's Summer, hot, and humid.

And your car's air conditioning isn't working.

What do you do?

Improvise!  ;-)

Sleep Number Got My Number

I am very excited about ordering a Sleep Number bed.

My good friend got one and recommended it!

Went to the store today and tried them out.

I was really amazed, especially since I have some significant back pain that I am dealing with.

I am hoping, G-d willing, for some pain relief and some extra Zzz sleep! ;-)

Sucking It Up

Here we are sucking up leaves in January.

It almost looks like we're sucking up the whole ground with it!

After the warmest decade on record, we seem to be having the warmest year on record.

It's 52 degrees out, and we've been reaching up into the high 60's so far this month.

Global warming or the big fires in Australia or action with Iran are heating things up here in Washington, D.C. ;-)

Oh Baby, It's Warm Outside?

I love when people can communicate through pictures effectively.

Truly, a picture is worth a thousand words--probably more.

This was a simple drawing to depict I assume global warming.

- 2000 some nice mountain glaciers.

- 2020 the snow is melted.

It's like the person didn't have to say a word.

But I get it.

Also, I know there is supposedly a lot of scientific evidence for global warming.

But for me personally, I don't see it or feel it.

The summers, if anything, feel cooler and the Winters feel colder to me.

I know that is anecdotal and not representative of the world.

However, it is hard to reconcile what the scientists say, when your own eyes aren't seeing it.

Granted, I'm not in Alaska where, for example, the glaciers are melting,

Still wouldn't we be feeling something here?

Maybe a few degrees really isn't perceptible.

I guess time will tell us for certain.

Hopefully, by the time we do see it, we won't get run over by the speeding train.  ;-)

Iced Pool BUT Hot Tub

So I learned this vacation that some people really seem to enjoy temperature extremes.

These folks on the left are in the outdoor steaming hot tub.

However, see the pool next to them on the right--it's nearly completely frozen over (and it would be except for a fireplace at the other end of the pool deck)!

The temperature outside a frosty 19 degrees fahrenheit.

Yes, for those who know me...I keep the air conditioner on in the Winter (true).

But even I didn't bare it all in Santa Fe in December--at least not yet! ;-)

Cool Cat

So yesterday I was coming home from the fitness center/pool.

I was wearing shorts and pool shoes even though it was only in the 30's-40's temperature out.

This large man with a Texas accent stops me to ask how I can dress like that around Winter time.

And it's particularly funny, because there is another man overhearing this conversation next to us wrapped up in no less than 2 coats/layers.

So I say in a lighthearted way "I guess that I just have warm blood, so the temperature doesn't really bother me."

He says, "Uh, in Florida, when it goes into the 60's, people start shivering and bundling up down there."

I smile, and say "Well maybe we're just different people."

Then he goes, "I like that--I like people that think different! You know why, [and he pauses and repeats again] you know why?"

I look at him sort of eyes wide open at this point waiting to hear his explanation to the build up.

And he says, "Because it means they don't give a sh*t what other people think!"

At that point we both started nodding and laughing.

Maybe you had to be there, but I think you can probably envision this sort of nutty scene.  ;-)

Green Data Center Cooling

I read with great interest this week in BBC about 2 mysterious barges off the East and West coasts of the U.S.

One barge is by San Francisco and the other by Maine.

The 4-story barges belong to Google.

There is speculation about these being, maybe, floating data centers.

I think that is more likely than showrooms for Google Glass.

These barges would potentially avail themselves of the ocean water for cooling the IT equipment.

I would imagine that there could be some backup and recovery strategy here as well associated with their terrestrial data centers.

But how you protect these floating data behemoths is another story.

A white paper by Emerson has data center energy consumption in the 25% range for cooling systems and another 12% for air movement, totaling 37%.

Other interesting new ideas for reducing energy consumption for data center cooling include submersion cooling.

For example, Green Revolution (GR) Cooling is one of the pioneers in this area.

They turn the server rack on its back and the servers are inserted vertically into a dielectric (an electrical insulator--yes, I had to look that up) cooling mineral oil.

In this video, the founder of GR identifies the potential cost-savings including eliminating chillers and raised floors as well as a overall 45% reduction in energy consumption, (although I am not clear how that jives with the 37% energy consumption of cooling to begin with).

Intuitively, one of the trickiest aspect to this would be the maintenance of the equipment, but there is a GR video that shows how to do this as well--and the instructions even states in good jest that the "gloves are optional."

One of my favorite aspects of submersion cooling aside from the environmental aspects and cost-savings is the very cool green tint in the server racks that looks so alien and futuristic.

Turn down the lights and imagine you are on a ship traveling the universe, or maybe just on the Google ship not that far away. ;-)
