@Eastern State Penitentiary

Photos are from my tour of Eastern Penitentiary in Philadelphia.

The prison cells were in these tomb thick concrete structures, freezing cold, and completely claustrophobic!

You have to stoop through a tiny doorway to get in and out.

The cell with the car in it shows how small these prison cells were.

There is a photo of a cell with a stinking toilet and also the one with a barbers chair.

Then there is the picture of the fancy cell which is that of Al Capone's (right after the regular disgusting cell). Pretty sure Capone had some real pull with the warden and guards, and I'm sure they were afraid to cross him.

There was even a synagogue in this frightful gothic-style prison with a light that says Shalom (peace).

One cell had art painted on the walls and had many of these dreamy-looking women in Island type spots so far away from the reality of these horrible prison conditions.

It was also interesting the the prisoners inside these walls were I'm sure dying to get out, and yet the visitors to the prison were lined up at the ticket booth to get a glimpse inside.

The whole experience was so full of juxtaposing contrasts.

I feel like I learned a lot. Overall, a nice place to visit, but I wouldn't want to live here! ;-)

Iron Maiden Torture

Check this out.

This is called an Iron Maiden.

It is from Nuremberg, Germany.

This one is from Medieval times, but they were apparently still around even in the 19th century!

It has 14 spikes on the inside that were designed to pierce the eyes, throat, and heart.

People placed for torture and death in the Iron Maiden sarcophagus would be completely mutilated.

Is this one of the reasons that so many people suffer from claustrophobia?

I remember seeing in a movie where someone was placed in a dungeon cell, but this one was carved into the rock wall horizontally.

The prisoner would be forced to lie down in it with iron bars caged over the side vertically.

S/he could not sit up, roll over, or move.

Can you imagine the sheer terror and torture?

How people could be so evil and inflict such suffering on others and often for crimes like heresy is extremely hard to understand.

Why in G-d's name does anyone call it the "good 'ol days?"

Why Yell And Intimidate The Child?

So at the table next to us this morning at breakfast was a mean looking lady and a fidgety young child.

The lady as we found out over the course of their dialogue was the child's grandmother.

And she wouldn't stop berating this kid, maybe 5-years old.

Grandmother: "Don't you dare get up from the table until I'm done with my coffee, [and then this weird chilling] thank you."

Child: Obviously looking to run around and have some fun, "But I just want to go."

Grandmother:  Who has finished her breakfast and coffee and is just making a continuing point, "You'll wait until I'm done, and I say we're ready, [and again, the long controlling pause and then] thank you."

Child: "I'm tired."

Grandmother: "Then you'll go upstairs, get back into bed and go to sleep, and no tv, just sleep--you will not move!"

Child: Looks up helplessly sad.

Grandmother: Now the truth starts to come out, "You know I don't like the way you treat you mother. Your disrespectful! And that won't go with me."

Child: Appears to not really understand what she is saying and legs dangle anxiously off the chair, but clearly very afraid to get up.

Grandmother: "You'll learn to be respectful to your mother. You will learn!"

Child: Head leaning sideways on table, says nothing.

Grandmother: Makes child wait some more and more, and finally, "Now we can go."

Child: Child picks head up and runs to take her hand.

Grandmother: Sneers and smirks with her power over the child--she looks like a freakin' witch.

Whole scene was sort of heartbreaking.

My wife and I look at each other, and shake our heads.

This was not teaching or loving, but something else and it wasn't normal or nice.

I say, "Perhaps, when a child is abused this way--day after day, year after year--this is why they grow up and then do horrible and hateful things."

It's amazing how adults take out their issues on children--and they think it's legit--but deep down you can see it really isn't--and the children and society pays for the sins of the adults. ;-)

Synagogue Time

So this is an interesting new phenomenon with synagogue.

Usually, we like to go a little later so that basically we are there for about an hour and a half of services.

That's about my attention span and then I start to get claustrophobic and antsy.

(BTW, some friends that go to Church told me that they have the same experience.)

But the last two weeks something changed...(no, not me).

Last week in Maryland, we went to synagogue and the people were standing in front with the Ark open and I thought wow they are way ahead and are finished with Torah reading and are putting the Torahs away already.

But after a moment, I realized they were only just taking out the Torahs for the weekly reading, and we were actually earlier than usual.

When I inquired in synagogue why they were behind schedule, I learned that to get people there for more of the services, they had decided to start later.

Ah, it's a trick!

This week in Florida, I went to the Chabad shule and we were running late (hey, it's vacation) about 10:45 and thought shule would almost be over, but they were just in the morning prayers still, and there wasn't even a minyan yet.

Two places, two synagogues, two weeks and they are changing the start times...

Seems smart from their perspective to try and get people there and for more of the services, but for the people who just want to come for a certain amount or parts of the service, isn't this just going to cause people to come even later in an endless cat and mouse game.

Start later, come later, start later, come later...

I'm no Rabbi, but how about a serious focused service--ONE solid hour (plus)--full of REAL kavanah (concentration), meaning, and sincerity, and everyone comes on time?

Start on time, come on time--really pray (no talking please)!

And still plenty of time for socializing and bonding after services at the yummy Kiddish.
