The Heart and Soul Of The Matter

So I had a beautiful conversation with an older gentleman who works in a menial job for minimum wage for most of his life.

But this person was shinning and smiling ear-to-ear.

What happened, he got offered a job to work in a lovely school as their cook.

He's been doing this as a special treat for the students once a year, and they decided to bring him on to do this full time.

He pulled out his phone and proudly showed me a picture of himself in the classroom surrounded by all the children.  He was in an orange sweater and stood out in the middle of all of them and with a smile that lit up the entire room.

He told me how the children thought of him as a celebrity chef and the teacher even organized autographs by him for the children.

His whole life, he questioned his worth, and now he felt recognized, appreciated, and loved.

I told him that I thought he was indeed quite a special person.

He said to me, you may have a talent or be special, but you have to recognize it--and he repeated aloud again at least three times emphasizing more and more on RECOGNIZE it.

Surely, after so many years, only now was he being recognized and more so, recognizing it himself.

Apparently, someone who worked in the school was also a renown food critic, and she had nothing but praises to sing of him.

Talking with him, I felt my eyes being opened.

Everyone can do good with their lives and have worth.

We have to recognize it in ourselves.

We need to just be given an opportunity to show it and share it.

It doesn't matter what you are or earn.

It matters where your heart is.

For many, they earn gazillions, but their heart is a heart of stone.

For others, they may earn minimum wage, but their heart is a heart of gold.

It's not the money, it's not the power, it's not the prestige...it's the heart and soul of the matter. ;-)

Seeing Your Life Flash B4 Your Eyes

So in near death experiences, it is common to see your life flash before your eyes.

Researchers believe that what you see isn't necessarily in chronological order, rather there is no time or space, and people report that "it all happened at once."

Additionally, people feel the experiences and pain from others' points of view.

It's like a melding of time and space in a single continuum.

This so-called life review experience (LRE) is eye-opening.

It's almost like a G-d's eye view of your life in the world.

In the worst case scenario, what we see at the end is what we failed to see during life--how far wrong we went and how much we hurt others.

If we wait until the end to open our eyes and see what's right in front of us all along, then frankly, it's too late to do anything positive about it.

Maybe you have to come back (reincarnated) for another try to do things better and make things right.

Hopefully, you learned something from this go around so that you are building incrementally and purifying your heart and your soul.

If though life experience, it's ups and downs, and pains and suffering, you still learn nothing...then what you see in the end is your own blindness to the eternal lessons of the omniscient creator--all in 20-20 extra clear hindsight. ;-)

Brain Sharing is Eye Opening

This is a neat video and idea from GOOD called "Brain Sharing" by Lincoln Schatz.

The idea...what if we could plug in to someone else's brain and see the world the way they do (for a period of time) or as they say in the video "swap CPUs"?

(This is a little reminiscent of the Borg from Star Trek, where species are plugged into the Collective and become sort of one ultimate race or similarly in the movie the Matrix, where people are plugged into a master computer program that runs their world--although here it's not an ominous context.)

But back to the point--what a powerful concept.

Rather than see things the way we see them, and think that's the way it is, period; instead we temporarily plug into someone else's brain (bionic implants away!) and whoa, we have the opportunity to see the world the way others see it and process the world the way they do--that is eye opening!

All of a sudden, things are not quite so simple. It's not black and white, as they say, but lots of shades of grey.

Of course, I still believe that there is objective ethics and morality from G-d for us to live by and therefore we can distinguish right from wrong, which we are often are forced to chose.

However, when we are seeing choices through others persons eyes and processing through their brains, we may see the problems anew with different variables and effects as well as see new options for solving them that we didn't even see before.

That's a great thing about being a diverse society and bringing multiple views, vantage points, and brains to the table--we can innovate together beyond the limitation of any one of us alone.

This isn't necessarily a new concept, but still one that is very important, often forgotten, and one well captured in this GOOD video.

P.S. Maybe an interesting exercise is to think about make a list of whose brains you'd like to share for a while (if only you could) and see the world the way they do.
