Have You Been?
Why is Hawaii one of those places where people always go:
Have you been?
They don't even say the words "to Hawaii".
Like Hawaii is just one of those places where you're supposed to read people's minds.
Have you been?
Umm, let me think a moment.
And before you even get a chance to respond further, the other person goes:
Oh, well let me tell you about the time we were in Hawaii and...
Of course, nothing much ever really seems to come after that except something about the wonderful beaches!
Like there aren't nice, exotic beaches anywhere else.
Frankly, it's a little remote anyway, no?
The other thing about Hawaii, of course, is if one of the volcanos starts smoking its angry stack!
Better start playing that little guitar Hula dancer! ;-)

The Best of Jewish Nigunim
Shlomo Carlebach was a master of Jewish Nigunim (melodies).
With his music he could literally move one's soul to reach for G-d Almighty in the Heavens and on Earth.
Thank you Eitan Katz for bringing this alive again.
I hope you can feel it as I do.
Hashem lives!

@Sandy Spring Museum Music Jam
So nice to see neighbors from the surrounding communities just getting together to play music and sing along.
It's amazing to me the good that people can accomplish when they come together like this.
This is hopeful and happy.

Every Time I Go Mexico
First, we went for a nice kayak boat ride around the lake.
Then I couldn't help stopping and listening to this relaxing and peaceful music.
These guys were great--I'd pay to listen to them.
Just a bunch of friends getting together to play beautiful music.
This is life as it should be. ;-)

The Flaming Bus
I took this photo today in Washington, D.C.
This cool bus is painted with flames on the hood and has a guitar at the top.
No, it's not the bus from The Partridge Family although it has similar colors!
On this bus, the guitar has the name "Sailing Conductors Jack Mantis" on it.
When I looked this up online, I found that these are some "music loving dudes" who travel (sail and bus) the world and record musicians across dozen of countries and 5 continents.
They have music, videos, and a 4-part TV series from their global talent search--although there is only limited material at their site (so not sure where all the recordings from the "hundreds of local musicians" is available for consumption).
Anyway, this is a fascinating experiment in discovering diversity, music and the arts, and culture along their travels.
As to the specific music--beauty is in the eye of the beholder. ;-)

Playing For The Meal
Five communication lessons I had reinforced from this:
- Be direct--he is right to the point...he plays, you pay--that's the deal.
- Be clear--the writing is large, the letters are distinct, and easy to read...you get it!
- Be concise--the message fits on a small cardboard...no rambling placards, just the message next to the guitar case for collecting the money.
- Be purposeful--he states the reason for his being there right up front...he's hungry and is willing to work for it!
- Be courteous--he ends with a nice thank you that is set off to the side in script.
If his playing is half as good as his message...he's earned his meal. ;-)
