It's good to let loose a little, but party animal I am not.
On second thought, what have I been missing all these years. ;-)

Teamwork, There Is No I
A colleague said very astutely, "even though some try to put it in there!"
Teams work best, when everyone does their part and contributes, and no one makes it about their personal agendas, ambitions, and issues.
A team implies a large degree of selflessness where we do what is best for the team and the mission we serve, and we don't get caught up in personal ego trips.
When people place themselves above the team--and they try to impose that "I" right on in there, then rather than teamwork, we end up with rivalry and conflict.
From my experience, those who try to take the credit for themselves--typically end up exposed for who they really are and without the honor they chase.
But those who give recognition genuinely and generously to others are in turn respected for their contributions to the mission as well as to the team.
Selflessly united as a team we can assuredly succeed, but selfishly divided as just a bunch of I's, we will most certainly fail. ;-)

Will You Be Missed?
There's a question everyone always ask themselves--when they are gone from an organization will they be missed?
We all tell ourselves that we are irreplaceable--when we leave everything will fall apart, that "then they will be sorry," and maybe they will finally appreciate us.
But when calmer heads prevail, we sort of know the truth that we are all indeed replaceable--there are others just waiting in the wings to swoop in for a chance to do our job and perhaps better than we ourselves did it.
But won't we be missed? They'll be a party, cards, well wishes, maybe even gifts, and people will say how much they will miss us, but then when we are gone--24, 48, 72 hours later--does anyone really care?
If we left things in disarray and without a succession plan--we kept it all in our head waiting for the day to show them all--then there will be a period that may not be so pretty for the others taking on the responsibilities we are leaving behind.
However, someone who would do that to the organization and their fellow employees, you may ask what good were they really anyway?
For the most part, when people leave, I think there is a transition period for people to adjust to change--this is normal, and then after that people go on thinking about life afterwards.
- What new opportunities are there for them? In a crude way, some may even think that there is now one less person for them to have to climb over to advance. With someone leaving, one can say even that their power flows back and is dispersed to the others in the organization to "pick up the baton," influence and lead.
- Some may realize that the problems the person brought to the organization (and everyone brings a mixed bag--both good and bad), have now left with them. Were they entrenched in the current ways of doing things and naysayers to any sort of change? Did they have an ego and a sense of entitlement after serving for years? Had they become stale and fallen behind the times in terms of best practices, new technologies, and so on?
- Others can look forward to new people and "fresh blood" coming in--reinvigorating the organization, bringing in new perspectives, fresh ideas, or as they say, "mix it up a little," shake the limbs, ask questions of the status quo--of course, you never really know about a new person, until the marriage equivalent of "you wake up with them in the morning"--you see how they actually perform on the job, in the culture, with the people.
Sure, there are some special people that are practically irreplaceable, because they are such visionaries, innovators, and leaders of people--that they are truly one in ten million. Steve Jobs is one of those that come to mind. These are the exceptions, not the rule.
For most people, we give to the organization and provide value--some people thrive for years or decades. It is individualistic and depends on many factors but especially the person to job fit and the person to organization fit. Factors that are in some ways quantifiable based on knowledge, skills, and abilities, but also depends on personality, culture, style, adaptability, motives, and many more things.
When a person is a good or great fit--there is almost nothing better for them and the organization then a long and productive marriage of the two!
But when the fit is bad--then it is bad for the person and the organization--there can be poor productivity, negative interrelationships, and bitter feelings.
Depending on the situation and fit...Often we wished people stayed longer and could keep giving their gift. Sometimes people know when the tea leaves are telling them to move on and the fit is no longer right. And still other times, some people overstay their visit and thereby do more harm then good.
How will people see you when it your time to leave? You want to be missed for all the right reasons. ;-)

People Needing People
My wife always tells me she needs a lot of personal space--she likes time and focus to do "her thing."
No one nagging, yapping, coming around, asking for things...just some quiet time for herself.
I can appreciate that--we all need time to think, be creative, take care of personal things, and pursue our own interests.
At the same time, people need other people.
When we are done doing our things, we need human interaction, attention, conversation, sharing, touch.
I saw a few things this week that really brought this home:
1) The Netflix show "Orange Is The New Black" about a young woman put in jail and how she handles all the challenges of being incarcerated with literally a cast of characters. But in one scene in particular, she is thrown in the SHU (Solitary Housing Unit) and within about a day, she is hearing voices and talking to someone that isn't there. Alone, she crawls up into a ball--like a baby--craving someone to come, anyone.
2) Visiting the nursing home today, I saw many old people screaming for help. It is a really nice nursing home as far as they go, and the people apparently weren't screaming because of mistreatment, but rather for attention--a human being to be there interacting with them. Interestingly, even when the old people are sitting together, they are still yelling in a sort of helpless anguish being alone, only calming down when a family, friend, or caretaker comes over to them, touches their hand or hugs them, asks about their wellbeing, and shows genuine human caring. Yes, they have real physical needs they call out for help for too, but I think even many of those calls for help--too many and too often to all be for actual needs--are just for someone to come around and pay them attention and be there with them.
3) I remember years ago, seeing some parents put their child to sleep at night. But the child wanted their parent to sit with them and comfort them while they drifted off to sleep. But this parent strictly followed the Dr. Spock guidance that you just let them cry it out, and boy did this little girl cry and cry and cry. I said to my wife, this is not the right way--it can't be. And I myself always fought that the children should be held and comforted when they cried, not forced at such a tender young age to be alone and "self-sufficient."
While people need time and space for themselves, even the biggest introvert among us needs other people.
In solitary, people can literally lose their mind--alone, scared, desperate, but solitary doesn't have to be a prison, it can be an emotional and mental condition where people are craving even just a hug from someone who gives a damn.

Rebuild, Not Regret
The Wall Street Journal (30 July 2013) says that it takes most people at least two years to recover from a breakup or a job loss.
And longer, if the loss is abrupt, sudden--and you are in shock, disbelief, and unprepared.
When something bad happens, this is an important point in our lives to stop, take some time, and reexamine our lives--Where are we going? How did we mess up? What's really important? How should we rebuild?
While you can't rush the healing process, I do think that the best medicine (after some recuperative time) is to "get right back on the horse."
When we suffer a loss, we feel traumatized, depressed, anxious, and self-absorbed.
But the best way to overcome those feelings is to take positive action.
Your feelings are important, but I don't think that the bad feelings go away until you replace them with positive feelings.
When my wife used to get some negative people in her life, she used to say, "I need positive energy around me," and I sort of used to laugh, but it's funny, in a way, she was really right.
Positive energy replaces negative energy. Good feelings replace bad feelings. A good situation replaces a bad one. Rebuilding replaces regret and loss.
This doesn't mean that when you suffer a loss that the void can ever be filled, but that the only real pain reliever is giving life meaning again--and that means doing something positive with it.
No, I don't believe in just jumping in to something before you are ready, doing something foolhardy or not well thought out, but you will feel and become better again by coming up with a reasonable plan and working toward it.
Taking positive steps forward is a better scenario than sitting idly in the dumps--for two years or longer, forget it. ;-)

Yes, I Mean No
This is a hilarious video of a social experiment.
This girl--a complete stranger--goes up to random guys and asks "Would you have sex with me?"
On the top there is a running counter--thumbs up or down--for how many of these guys say yes or no.
The final count for this girl and the complete strangers is 50-50!
The reactions of the guys who stumble all over themselves ranges from "Are you crazy?" and someone who actually calls the police on her to "Why not?" and "I will definitely have sex with you!" or how about this guy who offered up a middle of the road approach of "Would you like to hang out with us first?"
In a companion video, they reverse the social experiment, and a guy propositions random girls with the same cavalier question.
In 100 cases, he was rejected!
So are women more discriminating? Are they looking for intimacy while men are looking for a physical hookup? Or are men just driven by their chemistry, evolution, and species preservation to procreate far and wide?
While the girl chosen for this experiment is undeniably attractive, given the risk of STDs and AIDS and also broken relationships and even families, you still have to ask yourself are men's brains fully wired on right? ;-)

Simple Sticks Showing Complex Feelings
I came across these funny YouTube videos (beware though a little racy) with millions of views.
They are done using stick figures (or the more provocative term the creators use).
The focus is on 2 friends--"Red" and "Blue" and their interactions with other varied colored figures.
I think the stick figures are a brilliant way to tell about them and their exploits, so that you focus on their inner characters and their message and not on their superficial body looks.
Also, the notion of "color" for the different people is one hand a easy way to differentiate them, but also seems to have implications for the varied cultures and colors of people throughout the world.
Apparently, there is a YouTube Channel with a whole series of these 2 minute + skits, and now I understand that this stick figure theme is being made into a full length movie.
What I like about these is the simplicity of using these colorful stick figure characters to show life's ups and downs, relationships, and feelings in a very direct straightforward (and also raw) way.
Sort of like seeing and experiencing the complexities of life boiled down in simple and unfiltered way.
While 2 minutes is entertaining, I think 2 hours of this "in your face" would have me wanting to throw these sticks in a great big bon fire, yep. ;-)

When GPS Takes You Down The Wrong Path
I remember a couple of years ago, I was heading to an offsite meeting for work.
It was planned for a location that I wasn't extremely familiar with.
Of course, I turned on my GPS device in the car and set the destination.
It was a cold snowy day--the roads were iced--and it was already treacherous driving.
But I followed the GPS directions to a T.
I ended up in someone's backyard--at a dead end--practically in the middle of a cornfield.
I'm thinking to myself Crap!--what type of crazy GPS is this?
Thank G-d, I had my smartphone in my pocket and I opened up the GPS app on it and set the destination again.
Sure enough, it takes me off and running to the meeting location--about 10 minutes away!
Some things I learnt:
1) OMG, we are so very dependent on our technology; with technology gone wrong, I was stuck in nowhere land USA; with it right--I got out of there and to the correct location and thank G-d.
2) GPS is a capability that is critical for everything from getting us to where we need to go to getting our missiles to hit on target. Take away or mess with our GPS and we end up missing the mark--potentially big time and with devastating consequences.
3) Always have a backup, plan B. One GPS can be wrong as in this case, while the other GPS was correct. Redundancy and contingency planning is a must have, period.
4) When you're heading down the wrong road (or you're off course in international waters), man up and admit it and make a course correction. You don't win any brownie points for continuing to drive into the cornfields. ;-)

Medical Hacks
Usually when we talk about the dangers of cyber attacks, we are concerned with the dangers of someone stealing, spying, or systematically corrupting our information systems.
But Barnaby Jack who died last week at age 35 brought us awareness of another, more personal and perhaps dangerous hack...that of hacking medical devices.
Barnaby, a director at computer security firm IOActive, became known first in 2010 for being able to hack at cash machine and have it dispense money.
In 2012, he drew attention to a flaw in insulin pumps whereby someone could cause it to administer a fatal dose to its unknowing victim.
This week, Barnaby was going to demonstrate how heart implants could be hacked, killing a man from 30 feet away.
With advances in the miniaturization and battery life of personal medical devices and implants for monitoring and managing patients health, more and more people could be exposed to malicious or murderous cyber attacks on their body.
With the potential for RFID embedded chips for managing our personal identities to bionics for replacing or enhancing human body parts with electronic and mechanical implants, the opportunity for someone seriously messing with our physical person grows each day.
If dangerous vulnerabilities are discovered and exploited in these devices, an enemy could go from the traditional attack on our information systems to potentially sickening, disabling, or even killing millions at the stroke of some keys.
Imagine people keeling over in the streets as if from a surprise attack by a superior alien race or the release of a deadly chemical weapon, only it's not extraterrestrial or kinetic, but instead a malevolent cyber attack by a hostile nation or cyber terrorist group taking aim at us in a whole new and horrible way.

We're All Digitally Distracted
Focus, focus...forget it!
With smartphones, social media, email, texting, phone calls, meetings, and more...it takes a lot of discipline to not get distracted and actually get things done.
The Wall Street Journal (11 December 2012) laid out half jokingly that most people wouldn't even be able to finish the article because of all the technological and people interruptions in our daily lives.
There are various aspects to this problem:
1) Digital Addiction--We love and are addicted to the information, connectedness, convenience, and entertainment that computerization, digital communications, and the Internet provide. Loneliness be gone!
2) 24/7 Expectations--Employers, family, and friends expect that we will be available to them around the clock. We are tethered to our jobs and each other with computers, smartphones, Blackberries, telework, social media, and more. If I can't get to you, it's because you don't want to be gotten!
3) Fear of Missing Out (FOMO)--One of the concerns we have about getting off our devices is that we may miss out on something--that critical phone call or email may be regarding an important event, a special sale, a job interview, a long lost friend or lover, someone who needs help, or whatever. But if you shut yourself off, then you may just be missing the opportunity of a lifetime!
For most people the smartphone is the last thing they look at before going to sleep and the first thing they look at in the morning...assuming your significant other doesn't intervene.
Even going on vacation, for many, means checking work and personal emails and voicemails...a vacation is no longer a real vacation, just perhaps less work than going into the office.
On one hand, we have more information and connectedness at our fingertips than ever before, but on the other hand, we are living in virtual, and not physical, reality.
One example is how we sit with our families and friends, but every one is on their device and no one is interacting with each other in the room.
No wonder there is a movement now to "Turn it off!" or "Leave it at home (or work)!"--We are desperately trying to balance between cyberspace and personal space.
We can't afford to be distracted or to distract ourselves, incessantly--we need to focus on what's important, what needs to get done, and on those who love and need us.
Whether you do a zero email day or just leave it all behind vacation--everyone needs some time be human with each other again. ;-)

Needy And You Know It
The Wall Street Journal (15 July 2013) asks why some people seem to demand so much?
It explains that there are three types of people:
1) Secure--these people were raised in a consistently caring and responsive manner and they become warm and loving people themselves able to form healthy balanced relationships--where they can be apart from and together with others and function well in both situations.
2) Avoidant/Dismissive--those who are raised in an environment where neediness was not tolerated and was seen as suffocating, and so they learn to minimize closeness to others--they are distant and detached.
3) Anxious/Needy--People raised in an inconsistent environment, where they got mixed messages about nurturing, and they end up constantly feeling insecure and needy, like they will get drawn in and then rejected again, so they smother other people with their neediness and don't recognize and respect appropriate boundaries.
This third personality type, who is always needy and ends up pushing away other people, who feel suffocated, reminds me of a funny scene in Woody Allen's "Annie Hall" where a couple visit the therapist, who asks each of them how often they have sex? The man says, "Hardly ever. Maybe three times a week." But then the woman when asked the same question says, "Constantly. I'd say three times a week."
Just like people can't really change their basic sexual needs (men apparently wanting physical intimacy more often then women), so too people can't change the home life they were raised in--good, bad or indifferent.
Whether people are needy and clingy, aloof and dismissive, or plays between hot and cold, we need to figure out how to care about and love them for whoever they are.
Boundaries are key. Taking some personal space is healthy. Together time and intimacy is critical.
It's all about finding a balance--where each person has the time and space to be who they are, and then come back to a warm and caring relationship to share, rejuvenate, and laugh and cry together. ;-)

Sears Couldn't Sell An Appliance Let Alone A Rolex
So I was amazed at the depths to which Sears will go to try to save their horrible brand.
The Wall Street Journal (21 July 2013) described how Sears online has started a marketplace where they are now hosting the selling of high-end goods at their low-end department store site.
Sears which normally sells kitchen appliances, tools, and crappy clothing is now trying to market $33,000 Rolex watches and $4,400 Chanel handbags.
Good luck to that after their failed 2005 merger of Sears and Kmart--as if combining two lousy companies make one good one.
Since 2005, the company revenue has steadily declined about 25% from $53 billion to $39.9 billion and they lost $4 billion in 2011-2012. Yeah, that today's Sears!
My own horrible experience with Sears:
I went online to order a range, and Sears botched the order over and over again and kept me holding endlessly throughout the miserable process and at each stage asking for my feedback and apparently doing nothing with it.
Problem #1: It started out pretty simply--I asked for some guidance comparing a couple of models, chose one, and they entered my order. However, when I looked over the order, they had entered the incorrect delivery date--when I wasn't available. So I contacted Sears back to correct the mistake, but they couldn't get their system to reflect the correct date--it would only show the original incorrect date--and this is a multi-billion dollar company? But I shut an eye when a supervisor finally assures me that it will arrive on the correct date.
Problem #2: The next day or so, I get a call from a Sears customer service representative who asks me whether I am the Andy located in XYZ (some G-d forsaken location)--ah, no! Well, they explain that's where they have my order shipping to. They can't explain how that happened, but promise Sears will fix it.
Problem #3: This time, I get a call from the Sear's installation company. They are demanding that they will not come out to do the install unless I pay them a required inspection fee. But I explain that my order from Sear expressly states that shipping and installation are FREE. Sorry, they tell me free is not free, and if I have a problem, here's a number to their national whatever line.
Three strikes, Sears is out--I contact them to review what had happened and to cancel this order. They refuse to cancel it--again, I think to myself this is a multi-billion dollar company? Over and over again this goes on, until finally they agree to cancel the order and refund my money.
All this nonsense literally wasted hours of my time.

The Wall Street Journal (21 July 2013) described how Sears online has started a marketplace where they are now hosting the selling of high-end goods at their low-end department store site.
Sears which normally sells kitchen appliances, tools, and crappy clothing is now trying to market $33,000 Rolex watches and $4,400 Chanel handbags.
Good luck to that after their failed 2005 merger of Sears and Kmart--as if combining two lousy companies make one good one.
Since 2005, the company revenue has steadily declined about 25% from $53 billion to $39.9 billion and they lost $4 billion in 2011-2012. Yeah, that today's Sears!
My own horrible experience with Sears:
I went online to order a range, and Sears botched the order over and over again and kept me holding endlessly throughout the miserable process and at each stage asking for my feedback and apparently doing nothing with it.
Problem #1: It started out pretty simply--I asked for some guidance comparing a couple of models, chose one, and they entered my order. However, when I looked over the order, they had entered the incorrect delivery date--when I wasn't available. So I contacted Sears back to correct the mistake, but they couldn't get their system to reflect the correct date--it would only show the original incorrect date--and this is a multi-billion dollar company? But I shut an eye when a supervisor finally assures me that it will arrive on the correct date.
Problem #2: The next day or so, I get a call from a Sears customer service representative who asks me whether I am the Andy located in XYZ (some G-d forsaken location)--ah, no! Well, they explain that's where they have my order shipping to. They can't explain how that happened, but promise Sears will fix it.
Problem #3: This time, I get a call from the Sear's installation company. They are demanding that they will not come out to do the install unless I pay them a required inspection fee. But I explain that my order from Sear expressly states that shipping and installation are FREE. Sorry, they tell me free is not free, and if I have a problem, here's a number to their national whatever line.
Three strikes, Sears is out--I contact them to review what had happened and to cancel this order. They refuse to cancel it--again, I think to myself this is a multi-billion dollar company? Over and over again this goes on, until finally they agree to cancel the order and refund my money.
All this nonsense literally wasted hours of my time.

Less With Less
This was a funny picture of a "Complaint Jar".
"All complaints must be written on $1.00 bills or larger. Thank you."
Hey, if you're going to complain, put your money where you mouth is.
The person on the receiving end isn't looking for more negativity and insults about the job they are doing--they want compliments and tips!
This is similar to a story I heard today about an executive where he and his team where stretched thin and stressed out.
So at one point, when he was once again asked to do more with less, he slams his fist on the table and says, "No, we are going to do less with less!"
It is interesting that nationally and in our organizations, we are constantly asked to increase productivity, but at the same tighten our belts.
And in the short to intermediate term, we are able to shed "dead weight" and become more efficient.
However, over the longer-term, there does come a breaking point, where trying to do more with less results not in cutting fat, but in cutting bone--and the stress ends up in a fracture.
Before you know it, fists are slamming on desks, absenteeism is going up, people are getting sick, fights--verbal and otherwise--are breaking out at work, poor decisions are being made, fighting for scarce resources become fierce, and collaboration becomes overt warfare, and perhaps, even someone commits suicide or "goes postal."
Cutting for efficiency can work up to a point, after that all bets are off and you cut at your own and your organization's risk--then even the complaint jar or suggestion box will be nothing but a broken marquee. ;-)

Hyperloop Takes Us Supersonic
Elon Musk in a genius -- from SpaceX to Tesla to Paypal -- he has us inventing like almost no one else can.
Now his concept of the Hyperloop is once again breaking all preconceptions of travel on Earth.
Forget planes, trains, automobiles, and boats--Musk's promised open source plans would take us from New York to Los Angeles in under 45 minutes!
The system would be built based on the following premises:
- Safer in that it never crashes and is immune to weather
- Faster than any Earth transportation available today
- Cheaper than air travel
- Better using self-powered solar panels and energy storage
In business school, we were taught to think in terms of better, faster, cheaper--what's amazing about Musk is he has a track record of not just thinking it, but making it so.
While the Hyperloop doesn't exist today, I find it awfully exciting to think that one day, it will.
On the plus side, Elon Musk makes George Jetson our reality; on the minus side, now we have no reason not to visit the in-laws. ;-)

Workers Getting Choked
Took this picture today of a worker protest outside of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) in Washington, D.C.
It's a big blow up of a "fat cat" symbolically choking a worker.
You can see the reflection of the American flag in the window above the blow up cat.
And the guy off to the left leaning against the barrier is wearing the same shirt as the blowup worker.
Not sure why they were having this protest or how they were allowed to erect this right in front of OPM.
Hope they resolve this quickly--because this is some bad "public relations" to be seen in front of the agency that manages Human Resources for the Federal government.

And somebody else crossed that out and wrote "ever."
I guess people are fed up with all the signs reminding them to wash.
Seems like we have a hygiene rebellion on our hands! ;-)

Whether you're Jewish, Christian, Muslim, or any other religion, I think this is a great music video on living an introspective life, choosing right from wrong, and replacing guilt with inspiration.
We are all confronted every day with situations that are tests of our moral fiber and courage to do what's right--not necessarily what is easy,
We should choose carefully, consciously, and with a mind toward the master of the universe who watches over us.
While we don't control everything that happens, we can definitely make a difference in the world by the way we conduct ourselves to our G-d and to each other.

Like Buying A Nuke On The Black Market
Nations and terrorists will pay to find the fatal flaw in computer programs that will enable them to perpetrate everything from subversive cyber spying to potentially massively destructive cyber attacks.
As the world is focused on nuclear non-proliferation, computer weapons are the new nukes--able to do everything from a targeted strike on an organization or agency to taking out vast swaths of our nation's critical infrastructure.
According to the New York Times (13 July 2013), there is a great interest in buying "zero-day exploits"--one where governments or hackers can strike using a computer vulnerability before anyone even knows about it and can correct it.
The average zero-day exploit persists for "312 days--before it is detected"--giving amble time for attackers to cash-in!
Brokers are now working to market the computer flaws for a 15% cut, with some even "collecting royalty fees for every month their flaw is not discovered."
The average flaw "now sells for around $35,000 to $160,000" and some companies that are selling these are even charging an annual $100,000 subscription fee to shop their catalog of computer vulnerabilities in addition to the cost for each one that varies with it's sophistication and the pervasiveness of the operating system behind the exploit.
While governments and terrorists are on the prowl to buy the exploits for offensive purposes, technology companies are competing to purchase them and are offering "bug bounties" in order to identify the flaws and fix them before they are exploited.
We've come a long way from people and organizations buying software with their regular upgrades and patches to nations and hackers buying the knowledge of the flaws--not to patch--but to spy or harm their adversaries.
You can buy the bomb shelter or software patch, but someone else is buying the next more lethal bomb or vulnerability--the question is who will pay more to get the next exploit and when and how will they use it.

Uh-Oh Trouble
So I'm "middle age"...and all of a sudden the last few months I am having trouble reading.
I haven't worn glasses for over 14 years--since I had the Lasik procedure done.
Now, at the optometrist, he tells me, "Oh everyone ends up getting glasses whether you had Lasik or not."
He says: "Usually, people need reading glasses starting between the ages of 42-45."
Crud...back to those darn things again.
I remember in 1999 when I had Lasik, it was still a pretty new procedure, but my best friend and his wife had just gotten it and convinced me to go for it too.
Well, it wasn't what I expected and when they clamped my eye open and the doctor tells me to stare at a the little red light as the laser comes up to my eye...I was thinking to myself...this is NUTS!
But it actually went from bad to worse.
As the doctor starts working on the first eye, all of a sudden, he goes, "Uh-oh!"
What type of doctor is this that says oh-uh, and what in G-d's name did he do to me.
Well, he composes himself after pulling away and finishes, but then stops and says he'll talk to me afterwards.
As it turns out, as he pulled on the eye, something called the epithelium, a piece suddenly flaked off the eye.
Nothing seriously actually happened--no ill sides effects, but those 2 words while under the laser, "Uh-oh," really sent the shivers up my spine.
Let's just say, while I am glad I didn't have to wear glasses these last 14 years, the experience was a little traumatic.
I remember one other time in my life--when I experienced the Uh-oh moment--this time, I was actually the one uttering the Uh-oh.
It was right after I got married, and we had this cool idea that I would give my wife a haircut.
So, I start cutting and I'm thinking hey, this isn't so hard...and it's fun...and we also get to save money (hey, we were just starting out in life).
Then, I keep cutting and cutting not realizing how much I was taking off...at one point, my wife starts getting antsy and she says, "So how's it going (knowing that something wasn't right)?"
Then it hits me, I suddenly blurt out the big "Uh-oh!
My wife goes, "What did you do?"
Of course, I started to worry and couldn't get myself to really say and instead I just start cracking up.
Then she knew I had really messed up...and boy was I in trouble then.
Uh-oh is a phase you never want to hear or say...it means trouble has arrived. ;-)

With Surgical Precision
This is awesome--the iKnife ("Intelligent" knife) for cutting away cancer, can also detect the cancerous cells.
I had previously heard about dogs being able to sniff cancers such as lung, ovarian, and skin--but never a surgical knife doing this.
With the iKnife, a surgeon can use a electrosurgical knife to cut/burn away cancerous tissue, but even better yet, this knife sucks away the smoke containing the vaporized tissue to a mass spectrometer that analyzes the particles and is said to be 100% accurate (so far) in detecting cancerous tissue (from those that are normal).
This is critical because it can be lifesaving in guiding surgeons not to miss any of the cancer (and therefore also helps avoid repeat surgeries) as well as not removing unnecessary tissue that is not cancerous.
Dogs can help alert us to hidden cancers within and the iKnife can help remove them with greater precision and success.
Hopefully, with G-d's help, one day we won't need either anymore. ;-)

What A Good Answer Costs You
This was a funny sign that I came across with a colleague of mine.
It's a price list for answers.
An answer (presumably incorrect) is 75 cents.
A thoughtful answer (but again incorrect) is 1.25.
A bona fide correct answer is $2.15.
The only thing that's free is getting a dumb look.
I gave the guy $5 and told him to keep the change. ;-)

Those Are Some Prosthetics
Wow, prosthetics have come a long way--these are tough!
This video from Biodapt shows their high-performance Moto Knee being used in a variety of action sports including snowmobiling, motor biking, mountain biking, horseback riding, water skiing, snow boarding, and jet skiing.
Bloomberg BusinessWeek (11 July 2013) explains how the Moto Knee has hydraulic components that provide "tension and range of motion for intense physical activity."
They cost around $6,000 and don't replace the regular walking version, but Mike Schultz, the developer understands the need for these advanced prosthetics having lost a leg himself in a 2008 competitive snowmobiling accident.
I think it's wonderful that these high-tech devices are being made available for disabled people to be able to do a wide range of exciting activities.
My hope is that as the technology continues to advance that we can have--like a person's legs--one prosthetic device that is adaptive for use in every day use as well as more intense activities and sports.
It is hard to imagine people voluntarily trading their body parts for mechanical implants--but one day, in the not too distant future, these mechanical limbs will not only be a substitute for repair of real body parts, but will actually provide some superior capabilities--they will be used for body augmentation--and thus even be desirable by those who haven't lost limbs.
What gives a leg up to prosthetics, as Hugh Herr in the Wall Street Journal (12 July 2013) put it is "that the designed parts of the body can improve in time, whereas the normal body, the biological body, degrades in time."
With regenerative medicine and replacement parts by design, more than ever our physical bodies will be just the transient vessel that houses our heart, mind and soul--that which really makes us, us. ;-)

Many For The Price Of One
We were at the movie theater over the weekend and something funny happened when we went up to the counter to get our tickets.
I ask my wife if she also wants anything to eat like popcorn etc.
She says yes, and I ask the lady behind the counter where the tickets and snacks are sold for some popcorn to ring up.
She points to the next register and says "You need to get the snacks over there" (pointing about one feet over to the left).
I look at my wife like, okay and we pay for the tickets.
Then, we waddles over to the empty counter a foot over and wait for someone to help with the popcorn.
Well the lady who just sold us the movie tickets waddles over as well and says, "Can I help you?"
We almost cracked up laughing.
I said, "Yes, we would like some popcorn, please."
She says, "Sure," and proceeds to get the popcorn and we pay again.
What was hilarious was the lady selling the tickets redirected us to the counter over for the popcorn, where she in turn did the proverbial, changing of the hats, and then after selling us the tickets served us up the popcorn as well.
It reminded me of a TV episode I saw a kid where some people visit a small town and stop at the Sheriff to ask where the local inn is. The Sheriff points them down the street. Then the people go into the inn and there is the Sheriff again, but this time wearing the innkeeper's visor. After checking in, the people ask where the town pub is and then stroll over across the way. They walk up to the bar, and the bartender turns around, and sure enough it's the Sheriff/innkeeper now with a servers smock on and asks what they would like to drink.
I may not be remembering the episode completely accurately, but you get the point.
In a small town or an organization where people have to multitask, one person can play many different roles.
That's why very often management in interested in good employees who can "walk and chew gum at the same time"--employees need to be able to perform under pressure to get many projects and tasks done, simultaneously, and they very often need to assume multiple roles and responsibilities to get that done.
Pointing the finger at someone else saying not my job or the ball is in their court is no longer an excuse not to get things done. We have to shepherd the project all the way through the many leaps and hurdles that may stand in the way of progress.
When people have to perform multiple roles and jobs--due to time constraints, cost cutting, or shortage of trained and talented people--then they may have to change hats many times over the course of their day and week.
The Atlantic (5 July 2013) in an article about performing head transplants--yeah, an Italian surgeon believes this is now possible--retells an Indian folk tale called The Transposed Heads.
Two men behead themselves, and their heads are magically reattached, but to the other person's body. The clincher is that the wife of one of the men doesn't know which man to take as her husband--"the head or the heart."
It's a fascinating dilemma--what makes a person who they are--their thoughts (i.e. brain) or their feelings (i.e. heart).
Similarly, when a person performs multiple roles at home, work, and in the community--who are they really? Which role is them--at the core?
We tend to like doing one or some things better than others, but does what we like doing mean that is who we are? Maybe doing the things we don't like that challenge us to grow is what we need to be doing?
Like the lady in the movie theater--one moment she was the ticket master and the next the concessions attendant--both were her jobs.

The Atlantic (5 July 2013) in an article about performing head transplants--yeah, an Italian surgeon believes this is now possible--retells an Indian folk tale called The Transposed Heads.
Two men behead themselves, and their heads are magically reattached, but to the other person's body. The clincher is that the wife of one of the men doesn't know which man to take as her husband--"the head or the heart."
It's a fascinating dilemma--what makes a person who they are--their thoughts (i.e. brain) or their feelings (i.e. heart).
Similarly, when a person performs multiple roles at home, work, and in the community--who are they really? Which role is them--at the core?
We tend to like doing one or some things better than others, but does what we like doing mean that is who we are? Maybe doing the things we don't like that challenge us to grow is what we need to be doing?
Like the lady in the movie theater--one moment she was the ticket master and the next the concessions attendant--both were her jobs.
We too are made up of multiple and complex roles and identities--we are head and heart--and all the things they drive us to do in between. ;-)

News You Can't Count On
This is one of those unbelievable stories that you have to pinch yourself to see if you are dreaming or is it real.
An intern over at the National Transportation Safety Board provided KTVU a list of pilot names for the Asiana plane that crashed in San Francisco last week.
Only...the pilot names weren't real but a spoof making fun of the airline pilots, their race, and the crash.
With three people dead (including two 16-year old girls) and 200 wounded (with 2 still in critical condition) this really isn't a laughing matter.
But the gall of this intern to pass these names off to the news, and then the TV stations blind acceptance of these as fact, plus the newscaster reading them aloud and still apparently not realizing what she was saying...is completely crazy!
Don't believe everything...look closely, listen carefully--is it a joke, an agenda, brainwashing, or maybe at times, some genuine facts you can actually count on. ;-)

Head Spinning From All The Spin
The Nazi Minister of Propaganda, the evil Joseph Goebbels said, "He who controls the message, controls the masses."
All dictatorships function very much from this premise as we see even now a days in totalitarian governments that limit Internet access, block websites, and filter news and messages from the people, so as to keep them docile and servile.
However, even in a democracy as fine as ours, the ability to control the message is a very powerful tool in directing how events are understood by the public and what action is taken, or not.
Some recent examples:
1) Syria's Use of Chemical Weapons:
Numerous allies including England, France, and Israel say they have intelligence about Syria's use of sarin gas against their own people...So did Syria cross the red line and use chemical weapons requiring us to take action or is this a matter for investigation and evidence?
2) Iran's Violation of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty:
Iran is one of the world's richest in energy resources and reserves...So is Iran violating the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty necessitating that we stop them or are they just building nuclear facilities for peaceful civilian energy needs?
3) Egyptian Military Coup and Roadmap For Reconciliation:
Egypt's military overthrew the Egyptian Prime Minister from the Muslim Brotherhood who oversaw the rewriting of the constitution in 2011 to be based on Islamic law and not inclusive of other more secular elements of society...So is the restoration of true democracy and civil rights for the Egyptian people or a brutal coup?
4) Sudan Committing Genocide in Darfur:
With over 400,000 killed, 2,500,000 displaced, and 400 villages completely destroyed in Darfur...So did Sudan commit genocide requiring prevention, intervention, and punishment or was this just Sudanese internal conflict?
5) People Employed in U.S. at 30-Year Lows:
The proportion of the U.S. population that is working is at low rates not seen since the recession of the 1980's...So is the unemployment rate still a critical national issue or is the unemployment rate really better and the economy strong again?
6) Edward Snowden Leaking Classified Information:
Snowden sought out the job with Booz Allen Hamilton to gather evidence on classified NSA surveillance and when he did he leaked this information to the news and harmed national security...So is Snowden a traitor or a whistleblower?
7) An $82 Billion Federal IT Budget:
The Federal IT budget is anticipated to rise to $82 billion in 2014...So are we still spending on large troubled IT projects or realizing billions in IT savings from new technology trends in cloud, mobile, social computing and more?
As Bill Clinton in 1998 said when questioned about the Monica Lewinsky affair..."It depends what the meaning of the word is, is?"
We see clearly that definitions are important, interpretations are important, and spin can make right seem wrong and wrong seem like right.
How we communicate and present something is very important and has critical ramifications on what is done about it whether in terms of action, attribution, and retribution.
Moreover, we should keep in mind that "He who knows doesn't tell, and he who tells doesn't know," so there are limits to what even gets communicated from the get-go.
What is communicated, when, and in how much clarity or distortion is a function one on hand of people's agendas, biases, career building (including the desire to get and keep power), as well as the genuine need for secrecy and security.
On the other hand, the desire for openness, transparency, truth, and healthy debate (facilitated by the media, checks and balances in government, and the judicial system) provides a counterbalance.
We the people must press to determine--is the person telling it like it is or are some things being contrived, manipulated, edited, and Photoshopped.
In the end, critical thinking and looking beyond the surface can make the difference between what we know we know and what we think we know. ;-)

Living Longer, But With Worse Quality Of Life
They are good people--they've worked hard all their lives (nothing was just given to them), they are devoted to serving G-d, and they are loved by their family, friends, and community.
They have lived a good life and we are grateful for every day.
Yet as they are getting older, the body like anything physical, starts to get sick and break down.
Both my parents have serious illnesses, and in the last two years my mom has become almost totally disabled and is moving from a rehab center to a nursing home this coming week.
I read this week in the Wall Street Journal, what I've been watching with my own eyes...we are living "longer, but not healthier lives."
Over the last 2 decades, life expectancy has risen 3 years to 78 years, but unfortunately only 68 of those, on average, are in good health--meaning that people suffer for about ten years with various disabilities.
What is amazing is that people are being pressed to retire later in life with an increase in age to receive full social security benefits to 67 by 2022--giving the average person a healthy retirement to enjoy of just 1 year!
With the average working household having less the $3,000 in retirement savings, things are not looking too good for Americans to retire young and enjoy their healthy years either.
Additionally, despite longer living, in the last 2 decades, the U.S. fell from 20th place to 27th place in 34 member nations of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) for life expectancy and quality of life.
The leading causes of death remain heart disease, cancer, and stroke. And disabilities are being driven by back, muscle, nerve, and joint disorders.
Seeing with my own parents, the deteriorating quality of life and true suffering as they age, I am left questioning the real wisdom of keeping people alive, when the quality of life has so deteriorated as to leave them in pain and misery.
While no one wants to lose their loved ones--the emptiness is devastating--at the same time, watching them endlessly and needlessly suffer is worse.
I see my mom clutching her wheelchair, always in various states of discomfort and pain, and less and less able to help herself, in almost any way--it is tragic.
So I ask myself is it also unnecessary and wrong?
I call it forcing people alive. We keep people going not only with extraordinary measures, but also with day-to-day medicines and care that keeps their hearts pumping, their lungs breathing, and their brains somewhat aware.
The patients are alive, but are in a sense dying a long and painful death, rather than a quick and painless one.
I love my parents and mom who is suffering so much now, and I don't want to lose her, by does really caring for her mean, at some point, letting her go.
I tell my dad, "I just want mom to have peace"--no more suffering!
For the average person, 68 years of health is too short, but 10 years of disability and suffering may be too long.
We use advances in technology and medical breakthroughs to keep people alive. But what is the cost in pain and disability, and even in cold hard dollar terms for a nation being gobbled up by deficits, longevity, and miserable disease and disability?
People are living longer but at a significant painful price!
Is this real compassion and empathy or a senseless fight with the Angel of Death?
