In The Quiet Hours

I put this quote away in my files probably more than 30 years ago.

Maybe one of the most important sayings ever.  ;-)

Do The Right Thing

My wife said she was inspired by me and something I said over the weekend.

She created this meme based on what I said.

I couldn't be happier.

And my dear dad would be proud!  ;-)

Follow Your Inner Voice

As Steve Jobs said:

Follow your heart and intuition.

Do good!  ;-)

Don't Be Chicken

Don't be chicken.

Your goose is cooked.

Eat crow.

Proud as a peacock.

An ugly duckling.

The early bird catches the worm.

One flew over the cuckoo's nest.

Kill two birds with one stone.

What's with all the weird bird sayings?  ;-)

Weight Discrepancy

Maybe a little weight discrepancy on this boat.

Net effect is similar to the Titanic.

What is that cute little dog make a poop like that?

Sh*t flows downhill, as they say.  ;-)

Paranoid or Not

Thought this was a great quote on paranoia:

Just because I'm paranoid doesn't mean someone's not out to get me.

Think about that one a little. ;-)

Military Might

This was an interesting saying about getting soldiers to their peak performance:

You will breath thunder and fart lightening!

Yep, that's pretty scary stuff.

Here it comes! ;-)

Two Asses and A Horse

Thought this was an interesting saying that I heard:

Two asses can't sit on one horse.

Maybe a less eloquent way of saying that two kings can't sit on one throne!

But the imagery of the first one is funnier!  ;-)

Earning Respect!

Great Under Armour Shirt!

From the saying of Dwight Johnson, "The Rock":
Blood, sweat, and respect.  First two you give.  Last one you earn.

Yes, we respect all people in a humanistic way, but real respect is earned based on what a person does!

Blood and sweat means you're putting out, and trying your best to achieve something.

Make sure your efforts are going to something worthwhile.

Helping people!

Doing your responsibilities!

Being a good influence!

Honoring the Master of the Universe!

That's how you earn R-e-s-p-e-c-t. ;-)

Everything But The Kitchen Sink

Thought this was cute at Java Nation (BTW, they are a better Starbucks!).

A mini sink that says:
Everything But The Kitchen Sink

Truly, that sorts of like what they are since they sell coffee but also wine!

How did we ever come up with this saying about kitchen sinks to begin with?

Like would you ever make an offer on a property, and say:

I'll take it, but you keep the kitchen sink.

There must've been some pretty cruddy kitchen sinks along the way. ;-)

A Mosquito Into A Mule

So you know the old saying about:
Making a mountain out of a molehill

That's when you make a big deal out of nothing.

So yesterday, I heard the European version of this as:
Making a mosquito into a mule

Honestly, I like that version a lot better.

A mosquito bites and is annoying.

But a mule resists and is a very stubborn animal that can drive you crazy.

You definitely don't want to make a mosquito into a mule! ;-)

Wrong and Wrong

I thought this was a funny saying that my friend told me.
I'd agree with you but then we'd both be wrong!

He said that he actually liked it so much that he got a sign with it and put it in his office.

As they say, "Two wrongs don't make right."

If you think something is wrong, hold your ground--otherwise no one will be right. ;-)

Success Anchored in Function AND Beauty

Just a saying from Dr. Ferry Porsche (as in Porsche cars) that I liked:

"It has always been a principal of our company that function and beauty are inseparable."

If you can make something useful and attractive--you have a real winner!

Companies like Porsche and Apple get it (many, many others are clueless).

Product development is both art and science and therein lay the foundations of their success or failure. ;-)

Victory Or Defeat

I was reading Vladimir Jabotinsky's "Story of My Life."

And there is this quote that I really like attributed to Kipling in it:
Victory or defeat: learn to accept both with equanimity since both are deceptions.
I just thought this is profound.

We never really fully win or lose.

Everything is on a spectrum.

And where we think we are on that spectrum is often not even nearly correct.

You think you won that one, but guess what someone else has outsmarted you and you don't even know it yet.

Also, wins can be easily followed by loses and vice versa.

Things can turn on a dime and who's up becomes who's down--as the wheel of life turns and turns again.

Recognize that you don't control everything--actually, the only thing you do control is how you react and behave.

Everything else is a test to teach you and help you grow.

And as I heard from a speaker yesterday, "you can't make up in space, what you have lost in time."

Victory or defeat, both are deceptions.

Only how you choose to act is the real win or lose.

Them Tables Always Turn

Just wanted to share a saying that I liked.

It is an ancient Mongolian proverb and was in the movie, "Mogul" about the rise of Genghis Khan:
Do not scorn a weak cub; he may become a brutal tiger.
I think this is the Asian equivalent of:

1) Don't burn your bridges.
2  Don't start a war you can't win.
3) Pick on someone your own size.
4) What goes around comes around.

The Asian version is better! ;-)

Secret To Long Life

I just love this Tibetan proverb on the secret to long life

"Eat Half

Walk Double

Laugh Triple

and

Love Without Measure,"

The rest is icing on the Tibetan cake.

If I Could Get Back Time

My good friend, Jacob Elbaz, taught me this awesome saying in synagogue today:
__________________

"Yesterday is history.

Tomorrow is mystery.

Today is a present. "

Another way that my dad taught me is this:

______________________________________________________________

Today is the tomorrow that you worried about yesterday.

Hope you enjoy these!

Buyer Beware, Else Buyer Remorse

Just a quick lesson I wanted to share from my grandfather.

He used to say (or so my dad used to tell me), "You open your eyes or you open your wallet!"

Put another way is that "A fool and his money are soon parted."

But I like the way my grandfather put it even better--easier to remember and no name calling involved! ;-)

Genuine Artificial Gold

When I was a youngster going to summer camp, a great guy, "The Chief" lifeguard, used to tempt the kids to behave by offering them a prize of some "genuine artificial gold."

Here are some thought provoking sayings from a cybersecurity class I took recently (you decide whether these are true for your organization):

- Organizational Power: "He who controls the budget, billets, and IT controls the organization."

- Micromanagement: "There is no greater enabler of micromanagement than information technology [and a crappy manager]."

- Getting to a Decision: "A non-decision is a decision."

Managing Performance: "An organization is not well-suited to collecting data about itself."

- Mission and Personal Focus: "If you try to be everything to everybody, you end up being nothing to nobody."
