Nation's Homeless Capital

I took this photo yesterday of a homeless person completey huddled under a makeshift blanket "shelter"and tucked into a corner on the freezing streets of Washington. D.C.

The person is in front of Starbucks, and they seem to have been provided some hot coffee to help-- a nice thing by the coffee chain.

It has been particularly freezing this last week and seeing the number of homeless people suffering is unbelievable.

Just being out for a few minutes bundled up in layers, I was still cold, so I can hardly imagine what it is like to be out on the streets, living like this for prolonged, indefinite, periods of time.

When you see others' suffering in such a pronounced way, it is hard to take life's often silly daily problems as seriously, and we shouldn't.

When I juxatopse this scene, multipled thousands or perhaps millions of times over across the nation, it is also hard to understand a nation such as ours with $17.2 trillion dollars in debt.

Where the heck did all that money go?

Washington DC In 1892

This is a beautiful lithograph from Currier and Ives that I came across of Washington D.C.

It is called Chesapeake Bay Area - The City of Washington.

It's amazing how much less developed things were just a little more than a century ago.

You can clearly see the major landmarks and institutions like The Capitol, the Washington Monument, and The White House, but not much else in terms of government.

Notice that even the Supreme Court building isn't there--it wasn't completed until 1935.

We are a fast-growing and advancing society with a maturing government and capital city that today makes this historical photo look almost as if it's from fairy tale.

It's nice to look back and see how far we've come and introspect on where we are going. ;-)

Just Hanging Out

I understand when someone says they are just going to hang out, but this is ridiculous--a lion hanging out of the window, overlooking a main thoroughfare in the Capital!

With all the intrigue about the emails and affairs the last few days--I think this feline, might just be feeling a little curious.

The father of one of the ladies involved said there is a lot more to the story...Mr. Lion here is watching and waiting with the rest of us to hear what's up.

Certainly, not our finest national moment--and as Ricky Ricardo would say, "Lucy! You got some 'splainin' to do!"  ;-)
