Hyper Lips

These were some pretty big lips at CVS.

They literally stretched from one aisle to the next.

I'd like to see the lips open and hear some words come out like where the sales are at!

Even just some daily blah, blah, blah.  ;-)

3D Printed Octopus: "Shabbat Shalom"

This is a 3D Printed Octopus.

The bendable legs are cute.

It's sitting on a camera and tripod.

Soon 3D Printed Objects will even talk, and when they do, this one will say:
Shabbat Shalom!

Going Back To Ulpan

So yesterday, I started Ulpan classes to improve my Hebrew language skills (currently, I'm not very skillful with it).

It was 2.5 hours and it was such a joy for me and my wife and one of my daughter to have the wonderful opportunity to participate in this.

It wasn't like in Yeshiva where we focused on learning the Biblical and prayer book Hebrew, and on Aramaic from the Talmud, but was more focused on modern-day conversational Hebrew.

I loved learning and speaking the words, for example to describe a large cosmopolitan city like Tel Aviv.

We also listened to recordings of others speaking, read the text, and learned verbs.

It reminded me of my mom, who also used to love to take Ulpan, and carried around her notebook with the Hebrew words and their translation and the many descriptive verbs--she was so happy learning and practicing.

Given my horrible language skills, it was funny for me that I was asked if I wanted to join the advanced class...ah, no!  (or at least not yet...)

While so many languages (and cultures) have died over the ages, Hebrew and the modern State of Israel is a complete revival--it's truly miraculous!

There were people in the class from Asia, South America, and all over the world!

And from all the people there, I felt a tremendous love not only for the language, but for the land of Israel, and the Jewish people.

I wish like this beautiful language we all embraced, everyone could love and not hate us anymore!

White Lie, Black Truth

No this is not another civil or human rights post, although I like writing those as well.

Rather, this is about how we use our words to help and not hurt others.
"White Lie,
Black Truth"

Yes, we all know that it's wrong to lie (it's even in the 10 Commandments).

Except, of course, when we need to tell a "white lie" in order to keep someone's feelings from getting hurt.

For example, I may not like your new haircut, but when you ask me glowingly what I think, instead of telling you how it's too short or whatever, I tell you, "Yeah, it looks great!"

Then, there is the "black truth."

That's when we swallow hard and tell the  truth to someone, even though it may hurt their feelings, it's ultimately for their good.

For example, your child may be going of course with their lives, and while you don't want to hurt their feelings, you know you need to tell them the truth in order to help them course-correct.

Telling lies or truth can be hurtful to people, but a white lie isn't really bad, because it's used to protect someone's feeling, the black truth, is also not so dark and foreboding, because there are times when you need to get past the superficial, be real with someone, and tell them the hard truth in order to help them in a very practical sense.

That's one of life's most difficult lessons, that not everything is black or white. ;-)

The Trouble With Communication

So I remember this old comedy skit showing the problem with communication.

There is a deaf guy trying to communicate with a blind guy.

Boy, this is a real conundrum.

The deaf guy communicates with sign language that the blind guy can't see.

And the blind guy communicates by talking which the deaf guy can't hear.

So neither are getting any messaging across.

This is sort of like every day life, where people communicate talking past each other.

Each may only be concerned with what they feel, think, and have to say.

They don't really care to listen or understand the other person.

It like the blind and deaf guy communicating and neither can hear the other.

Most importantly, we need to put ourselves in the other person's shoes.

To think from their perspectives, and to communicate having in mind to fulfill for the other person--what's in it for me (WIIFM).

In Judaism, their is an important teaching that each person is an entire world unto themselves.

We need to be sensitive to their world and speak our mind, but definitely in their language. ;-)

Guard Your Menorah

This was a funny picture I took of a zebra with the stripes that are in the shape of a Jewish menorah.

The menorah has a center stem from which to light the branches extending upward to the left and right on the menorah.

Last night at a Shabbat dinner, someone said something very interesting about keeping G-d commandments and staying innocent and holy.

He said a person face, which has 4 of our senses (mouth, eyes, nose, and ears) is actually like a menorah.

These start at the center of the face and then are emanating upwards and outwards:

- First, the mouth (speech)  is sort of the center stem--and our words needs to be carefully spoken so that we speak nicely to others and not to hurt them with what we say.

- Second, our nose with 2 nostrils (smell)--we should smell holy things like the sacrifices and incenses to G-d, and not things that make us improperly attracted to worldly impurities, like inappropriate sexual partners, drug, smoking, and alcohol.

- Third, our 2 eyes (sight)--we need to see the good in others and the world around us, but guard ourselves so that we do not see things that make us want, desire, and lead us astray after falsity.

- Fourth, our 2 ears (hearing) --we work to avoid hearing "evil speech" about others and instead seek to perceive words of insight, spiritually and growth.

I would add the following to complete our 5 senses:

- Fifth, our 2 hands (touch)---because if we but lift our hands up to heaven in prayer and servitude to G-d, then we use our sense of touch for helping rather than hurting people.

So while this zebra has a menorah on his side, we have it built into our very faces and bodies.

And with a little effort, we can use all our senses for doing good, and guard ourselves from the otherwise seemingly natural impulses to do otherwise.  ;-)

Disabled Be Heard

Promising technology coming from Israeli startup Voiceitt.

Chosen by Wall Street Journal global technology conference as an audience favorite application.

This technology will help the disabled who have trouble speaking to effectively communciate with others.

The application translates sounds and intonation patterns into words that can be understood.

Victims of Stroke, Parkinsons, ALS, Cerebral Palsy, and Autism may benefit from this.

The founder of the technology himself has two siblings with Cerebral Palsy and he is driven to personally address their challenges.

Application is expected to be released 2nd quarter 2015.

To me, it is especially encouraging when we use technology to help the disabled live a fuller and more comfortable life.

Life is tough enough on people the way it is already, so if we can help make things better for those who are disadvantaged in any way, what a great, great thing to do! ;-)
